  • Very Tasteful History
  • Greetings from Florence & Lola

Thank you for being interested in our tasteful history. We’re very proud of our past and pleased to share it with you.

In 1958, Jimmy and his wife Ella, started a restaurant called “The Fish House” in Stewartville, Minnesota. Stewartville is just south of Rochester, Minnesota, home of the world famous Mayo Clinic.

The Fish House quickly became a favorite dining spot in southeastern Minnesota. Jimmy grew tired of the same-old salad dressings that were available, so he began creating his own. Jimmy’s fresh, rich-tasting, flavorful, creamy salad dressing became so popular the customers began asking for a jar to take home. The word was out about the distinctive Fish House salad dressings. Soon area grocery stores wanted to stock it, too.

In 1990, Tom, Jimmy’s son, took over the business. He soon encountered a new challenge. He learned that the name “Fish House Dressing” was misunderstood when he met with stores outside of the area.

Matter of fact, in September 1998 issue of Entrepreneur magazine, Tom said, “Our customers thought there was fish in the dressing or they’d think of a building where fish were cleaned! Obviously it was time for a name change!” With the approval of Jimmy himself, Tom began calling the fantastic salad dressing Jimmy’s Salad Dressing! You will find Jimmy’s also has caramel dip, veggie dip, tartar sauce, low-fat and no-fat dressings, too.

So next time you’re in the produce section, with all the other fresh stuff, and see Jimmy’s proudly displayed by your neighborhood grocer, you’ll know all about the very tasteful history of Jimmy’s Salad Dressings. Enjoy!

Jimmy's Salad Dressings, Florence and LolaThank you for visiting the Jimmy's Salad Dressings & Dips website. Here at Jimmy's, we are always getting questions about Florence and Lola. Their radio ads and television commercials have caused quite a stir in our small rural community and the locals now consider the gals "celebrities".

Lola Wendt, age 87 and Florence Yeadon, age 85, are really sisters and have been working with the Slightam family for over thirty years. Both started working in the kitchen of the Fish House with Jim Slightam, "Jimmy" and now work with Tom Slightam at Jimmy's Salad Dressings & Dips.

When asked why they are still working Florence and Lola reply by saying, "We enjoy our work, the income helps and it allows us to see each other everyday."

Florence and Lola are in charge of labeling all the jars at Jimmy's. Each has their own labeling technique. Lola labels hers jars "right-side-up" and Florence labels her jars "up-side-down". Hence the idea for their first commercial…the rest is history. They have completed four commercials and numerous radio spots for Jimmy's with more to come.

Florence and Lola received honorable mention awards in September 2000 for being recognized as two Minnesota Outstanding Older Workers from Green Thumb Inc. and Prime Time Awards. They have also been featured in the local Stewartville Star newspaper, the Rochester Post-Bulletin and Austin Herold. They were also included in an article featuring Jimmy's in Minnesota Corporate Report. Look for them soon to be featured on "On the Road with Jason Davis" from KSTP News, Channel 5.
